Terranova Expresswhich runs under Microsoft Windows NTorders, upgrades and
distributes client applications via intranet. Its secure client and server software
bypasses download hazards inherent in Web browsers and Internet protocols.
We stripped out all the Internet toolsFile Transfer Protocol, Hypertext
Transfer Protocol, Transmission Control Protocol, Terranova said. Users can only get
in with free client software.
Also free is the Terranova Express server software, which dedicates intranet access
channels to the ESD function, but the customer must buy and maintain the hardware and
possibly pay an annual fee for the service.
Because no Internet tools are present, Terranova said, the system cannot be hacked from
outside. If an inside user compromises the client software and accesses the server without
authorization, a message authentication code identifies the user.
Terranova said either Lucent or other software vendors can act as the license reseller
for the applications chosen for download. Lucent charges for the downloads on a sliding
scale, starting from $3 per download. He said the cost is lower than for processing a
purchase order or installing a CD-ROM disk. Lucent will discount the download fees to
government purchasers, he said.
Terranova Express can distribute applications from leading vendors such as Microsoft
Corp., Lotus Development Corp. and Adobe Systems Inc. The downloads can be relicensed,
Terranova said, so that an agency could transfer a departed employees programs to a
successor.
The lack of paperwork and short lead times for installation reduce overall software
procurement cost, he said. Buyers need not configure the client software, and warranty
rights are maintained. Each day, the Terranova Express server uploads transaction details
to Lucent for billing purposes.
The server software sits behind a firewall with a modem link to the intranet, and it
can be freely replicated on servers throughout an organization. More information appears

Terranova Express requires a TCP/IP intranet, clients running Windows 3.x, Windows 95
or NT, and RJ-11 telephone service located near the server machine.
