VirusScan now handles hostile Java applets
Connecting state and local government leaders
In VirusScan 4.0 Enterprise Edition, Network Associates Inc. has combined the scanning engine from recently acquired Dr. Solomon's Software Inc. with the ActiveX and hostile Java applet protection developed in previous versions of VirusScan. Some users had thought that the Santa Clara, Calif., company would discard the Dr. Solomon's technology, but the company has tried to retain the best features, said Sal Viveros, director of marketing for Total Virus Defense at Network Associates.

hostile Java applet protection developed in previous versions of VirusScan.
Some users had thought that the Santa Clara, Calif., company would discard the Dr.
Solomons technology, but the company has tried to retain the best features, said Sal
Viveros, director of marketing for Total Virus Defense at Network Associates.
Web surfers can pick up ActiveX and hostile Java applet viruses at infected Web sites
without knowing it, Viveros said.
VirusScan 4.0 searches for viruses at the post office box level, detecting them before
users open infected e-mail messages, Viveros said. It extracts and encrypts unknown
viruses before e-mailing them to Network Associates for identification, he said.
An AutoUpdate feature lets the administrator place a VirusScan 4.0 update on the
server, and the client VirusScan versions on the network will automatically update
themselves. Or the administrator may prefer to update the patches manually, maintaining
some control over the process, Viveros said.
Microsoft Windows 9x and MS-DOS clients can use the initial version of VirusScan 4.0
Enterprise Edition. Network Associates plans to release versions for Windows 3.1, NT
Workstation 4.0 and IBM OS/2 in 1999, Viveros said. The company will continue to develop
Dr. Solomons Virex anti-virus software for Apple Macintosh users, he said.
VirusScan 4.0 starts at $25 per seat for 1,000 users under a one-year subscription as
part of Network Associates Total Virus Defense suite.
