FW2000 server does inside job for personnel vehicles

FieldWorks Inc. claims its FW2000 Series Embedded Vehicle System is tough enough to handle computing requirements inside personnel carriers and tanks. Officials of the Eden Prairie, Minn., company said the FW2000 server complies with the military standard 810E for shock, vibration, blowing rain, and windblown water and dust. It also has the National Electronics Manufacturers Association's 4X rating for corrosion, dust, ice, rain and water, according to FieldWorks.

Officials of the Eden Prairie, Minn., company said the FW2000 server complies with the
military standard 810E for shock, vibration, blowing rain, and windblown water and dust.
It also has the National Electronics Manufacturers Associations 4X rating for
corrosion, dust, ice, rain and water, according to FieldWorks.
The FW2000 Series EVS server has a Pentium MMX or Advanced Micro Devices Inc. K6
processor as fast as 266 MHz, 16M of RAM upgradeable to 128M, 4M of video RAM and 512K of
Level 2 cache.
It has two open slots, accepts one Type III or two Type II PC Cards, and comes with a
2.1G removable hard drive. A 4G hard drive is optional. Users can connect Universal Serial
Bus peripherals. The server operates on direct current at 10 to 30 volts.
The remote display, a 10.4-inch, 800- by 600-pixel SuperVGA LCD, is daylight-readable
and can be dimmed for night use. The panel works as far as 16 feet away from the server.
Users can connect and communicate with up to 270 peripheral devices through the server.
The FW2000 server starts at $2,800 on the companys General Services
Administration Information Technology Schedule contract. A complete vehicle system,
including remote PS/2 keyboard and mouse and remote display, is $5,200. Microsoft Windows
98 comes standard; Windows NT 4.0, Windows 95, MS-DOS 6.22 and Unix operating systems are
optional.
The Army Aviation and Missile Command, Coast Guard, and Defense and Transportation
departments use FieldWorks products.
