L-3 TRL Technology, a unit of L-3 Communications' Integrated Systems Group, has launched the next generation of its Broad Shield force protection device against improvised explosive devices.
The product is being displayed at the AUSA annual meeting and exposition Oct. 9 to Oct. 11 at the Washington Convention Center.
The Broad Shield Tactical Manpack (TMP) is a programmable IED jammer and countermeasures system that upgrades L-3 TRL Technology's combat-proven Broad Shield force-protection units currently deployed by coalition forces, according to a company statement.
The statement said L-3 TRL Technology created the new version based on customer feedback and operational experience, and after extensive testing against a broad range of threats.
Approximately 50 percent lighter and smaller than its predecessor, Broad Shield TMPs retain the original system's flexibility ' including the same frequency range, performance, mission duration and transmit capabilities ' combined with an increased ability to address simultaneous threats, the statement said.
The Broad Shield TMP can be configured for various uses, installed in a vehicle, hand-held for explosive ordnance disposal, or for on-base protection duties. The Broad Shield TMP can handle the diverse frequencies used by remotely controlled IEDs.
L-3 TRL Technology's Broad Shield TMP uses all available electronic counter- measure jamming techniques including spot jamming, multiple-target spot jamming, and wideband noise jamming. The equipment is fully field-programmable, so new mission parameters and waveforms can be loaded into the unit from a handheld device or laptop.
L-3 TRL Technology is a manufacturer of radio and satellite communications systems with operations at a number of secure sites near Tewkesbury, England.
The L-3 Integrated Systems Group is based in Greenville, Texas, with facilities in Texas, Mississippi, Kentucky, Oklahoma, Virginia, Maryland, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Australia and the United Kingdom.
L-3 Communications supports a variety of homeland security initiatives with products and services. Its customers include the Defense and Homeland Security departments, selected government intelligence agencies and aerospace prime contractors.
