In preparation for the transition to Internet Protocol version 6, agencies should incorporate the new technology into their strategic plans and update their enterprise architectures by February, according to the CIO Council.
The CIO Council Architecture and Infrastructure Committee earlier this month issued Chapter 1 of its IPv6 implementation guidance, detailing steps agencies should take to prepare to meet the June 2008 deadline for incorporating the new technology.
The Office of Management and Budget last August set a timetable for agencies to migrate to IPv6, and the CIO Council is providing a four-chapter implementation guidance to help departments meet the deadline.
'Since IPv6 has the potential to impact agency decisions about business performance, business processes, information technology infrastructure, security and other strategic initiatives, IPv6 should be incorporated within the agency's strategic plan and enterprise architecture development activities,' the guidance stated. 'Agencies should create a cross-functional team to support IPv6 transition planning and implementation, including representatives from agency lines of business, infrastructure, application development, security, enterprise architecture, capital planning and procurement.'
Additionally, OMB expects agencies to complete their IPv6 transition plans and progress reports by February 2006.
In the guidance, the CIO Council said agencies in their strategic plan should identify:
- The strategic drivers for IPv6 adoption, including specific goals
- How IPv6 could benefit specific lines of business to achieve improved performance
- How IPv6 could benefit cross-agency LOBs, such as improving the communications infrastructure for first responders
- The impact IPv6 will have on organization planning, budgeting, procurement and human resources management and
- Performance objectives for IPv6 transition programs.
