A partnership between the Mid-Atlantic Crossroads and Bytegrid Holdings will provide a secure, advanced infrastructure platform for the research and education community across the mid-Atlantic region.
The Mid-Atlantic Crossroads (MAX), a multi-state optical network operated by the University of Maryland, and Bytegrid Holdings, a provider of multi-tenant data centers, announced a partnership to provide a secure, advanced infrastructure platform for the research and education community across the mid-Atlantic region.
The platform would also be provided to federal agencies that are expanding their presence in Montgomery County.
MAX owns and operates an all-optical, Layer 1 core network that is the foundation for high-performance infrastructure providing 100 gigabit/sec network technology and services. MAX participants include universities, federal research labs and other research-focused organizations in the Washington and Baltimore metropolitan areas. It also serves as a connector and traffic aggregator to the Internet2 national backbone and peers with other major networks.
In this partnership, MAX will establish a terabit-capable point of presence (TeraPoP) in Bytegrid’s Silver Spring, Md., data center. Launching a TeraPoP at this location puts Bytegrid’s data center within MAX’s high-performance network footprint, allowing members of the local life sciences research community to integrate massive storage archives (typically involving petabytes of data) with high-performance compute and network requirements.
Bytegrid’s “Maryland Connect” program will have access to all MAX advanced services, and MAX participants will benefit from Bytegrid’s data center facilities.
The expansion of MAX’s 100-gigabit/sec advanced networking infrastructure within BYTEGRID’s Federal Information Security Management Act (FISMA)-compliant facility also lets both organizations offer highly secure colocation solutions to participants in the government community.
Other available services will include direct connection into Amazon Web Services, as well as an “Innovation Sandbox” focused on the development of ultra-high-throughput IT infrastructure solutions.
