MobileIron combines device, cloud and app security
Connecting state and local government leaders
MobileIron Access helps secure cloud data accessed through commonly commercial apps on mobile devices.
MobileIron, a provider of secure mobile solutions, introduced its newest tool for securing cloud data on mobile devices by combining user, device and app authentication.
Because verifying user identity alone cannot ensure security, MobileIron Access allows only trusted applications on trusted devices with trusted users to access enterprise, corporate or agency data in the cloud. The solution integrates with commonly used cloud apps within agencies, including Box, Google Apps for Work, Office 365 and Salesforce, according to MobileIron.
Before the mobile era, an agency could limit access to enterprise apps on agency-issued computers to authenticated users because the apps and data would reside in the organization’s data centers behind firewalls.
In a mobile and cloud ecosystem, an authenticated user could access agency cloud data, download it via a non-trusted third-party app, then store it in a personal account, MobileIron explained. This form of data loss can be prevented if agencies ensure that the device, user and app are all authorized. Access only allows access to approved apps with data managed in the enterprise sandbox to connect to cloud services on mobile devices and will block access to cloud services from apps and devices not authorized by the IT department.
Access also integrates with identity products such as Ping Identity’s PingOne and Microsoft Active Directory Federation Services, supports federated authentication with Security Assertion Markup Language (a common single sign-on standard) and allows backend visibility into users, apps and devices accessing the cloud service.
“With the increasing adoption of cloud services like Box and Microsoft Office 365 in the public sector, agencies need assurances that only trusted users on trusted devices can have access to those services. MobileIron Access provides for this higher level of trust that both DOD and civilian government agencies require,” MobileIron Senior Director of Product Management Chris Dobrec said.
