Connecting state and local government leaders
The National Justice Information Sharing Initiative grant will advance enterprise architecture and information sharing among states, NASCIO offciials said.
The Justice Department has awarded the National Association of State Chief Information Officers a grant to advance justice information sharing at the state government level.
The National Justice Information Sharing Initiative grant, in the amount of $200,000, continues the partnership that began in 1998 between NASCIO and the Bureau of Justice Assistance to advance enterprise architecture and information sharing in the states, NASCIO officials said.

"This funding attests to the value the Department of Justice places on cross boundary collaboration and information sharing and the importance of NASCIO in achieving that objective," Dugan Petty, NASCIO president and Oregon CIO, said in a news release.
NASCIO has a long history working with the DOJ, contributing to initiatives such as the National Information Exchange Model, the Global Reference Architecture and the Global Justice Information Sharing Toolkit, Petty said.
"NASCIO is a strong proponent of adoption of these best practices across all lines of business in government." The long term partnership with the DOJ is one of NASCIO's most strategic collaborative relationships, Petty said.
The awarded grant proposal contains several major objectives for the upcoming program year that include:
- Promote the broader adoption of best practices that enable the forming of cross-boundary collaboratives.
- Promote the work products coming out of the Global Justice Information Sharing Initiative that enable information sharing and cross-jurisdictional collaboration.
- Maintain an expertise center for states in enterprise architecture, providing management guidance and consultation focused on data architecture and governance.
- Promote the sharing of best practices and enabling technologies for information sharing and collaboration between justice and other government lines of business.

"Enterprise architecture is a very broad discipline encompassing more than technology," said Doug Robinson, NASCIO executive director. "It is through enterprise architecture that we can guide optimization and rationalization of government services and the enabling investments in technology to achieve economies of scale and efficiencies," Robinson said.
Bottom line: EA is how state government can deliver better services at lower cost. The support from DOJ provides NASCIO the necessary resources to continue this work, he added.
NASCIO's enterprise architecture program begins its 15th year as an expertise center in enterprise architecture. The program's publications have become references for academia, government and industry enterprise architecture programs worldwide, according to Jack Doane, the state of Alabama's director of the Information Services Division within the Department of Finance. Doane is NASCIO's representative on the DOJ Global Advisory Committee.
