Connecting state and local government leaders
Route Fifty connects the leaders and innovators advancing state, county and municipal government across the United States to the insights and analysis they need to confront today’s most urgent challenges.
Key to mission success and effective public services are agile leadership, future-proofed policies and technology, which is woven into every aspect of government.
Social services workers rely on platforms that help them prioritize cases and address mounting backlogs. Intelligent transportation systems manage traffic flow, catch speeders and run public transit systems. Managers use data to identify patterns and trends in operations. Similarly, those designing, buying and implementing technology must understand the policy and funding challenges confronting today’s leadership in order to craft the most effective solutions.
Making states, counties and cities more efficient is the job of governance and technology. We need to get away from talking about one and not the other. Today’s leaders must be both managers and technologists.
That’s why Route Fifty is dedicated to creating products and environments that allow leaders from across geographic and institutional boundaries to share ideas, identify best practices and avoid pitfalls.
We are interested in stories that provide insight and analysis on management, technology and policy to help guide and inspire innovative leaders across state and local government. To that end, we cover a variety of topics under that umbrella, including cybersecurity, finance, artificial intelligence, housing, transportation and innovation.
Route Fifty was first launched as Government Executive’s State & Local channel in 2014, and expanded to a standalone digital publication a year later. In 2023, GCN—which has covered public-sector IT for nearly 40 years—was merged into Route Fifty to serve the full range of state and local decision-makers.
