Writer's Guidelines
Connecting state and local government leaders
Route Fifty is a news publication owned by GovExec that focuses on state, county and municipal government around the United States. Route Fifty’s editorial mission is to connect America’s leaders by providing insight and analysis on management and policy to help guide and inspire innovative leaders across state and local government. We are dedicated to sharing ideas and identifying best practices in infrastructure, finance, management, technology and innovation.
Our target audience includes state and local government practitioners, managers and leaders and others outside government who are engaged with the public sector and have an interest in how state, county and municipal governments function and operate.
Route Fifty publishes news articles, analysis and observations from staff writers, regular contributors and special guest contributors, including freelance journalists.
Freelancers with ideas that fit our editorial mission should submit a short pitch for consideration.
Most freelance articles are under 1,000 words but Route Fifty occasionally runs longer in-depth features.
Guest articles are often written by state and local government employees, leaders and elected officials or private-sector observers who are actively engaged with the public sector. Like freelance articles, most guest articles are under 1,000 words. If you’re interested in submitting an article for consideration, send an email describing what you propose to write about. The email should detail your relevant experience and expertise. We must be notified if the piece has been submitted to multiple publications simultaneously and if another publication plans to publish it.
If we accept the article for publication, we also require:
- Author bio. At the end of the article, please include a one- to two-sentence description of your professional background.
- Signed agreement. The first time you write for us, you must sign an agreement granting us permission to use your work, name, image and likeness across our platforms and guaranteeing that your work does not infringe on the rights of any third party.
