A former high-ranking security official at Los Alamos National Laboratory has received a $930,000 settlement in the wake of his retaliatory firing last year.

The University of California, which holds the contract to manage the lab for the Energy Department, reached the agreement earlier this month with Glenn Walp, who had been fired as head of Los Alamos' Office of Security Inquiries after investigating equipment thefts'including missing computers'and other abuses.

In March the university settled for an undisclosed sum with Steven Doran, the other whistleblower terminated by the lab in 2002, said Lynne Bernabei of Washington, an attorney for the ex-officials.

Walp's agreement includes a $900,000 lump sum and three-and-a-half months' salary. In January, Walp and Doran started working as oversight consultants to the university president's office, but Walp no longer works for the university system.

The settlement with Walp is 'an acknowledgement that UC treated him and Steve Doran very poorly,' Bernabei said. Attorneys for Walp and Doran had drafted a lawsuit against the university but had not actually filed one before the settlements, Bernabei said.

Although he said he is pleased with the settlement, Walp maintained the lab still needs a new contractor. The Energy Department will recompete the lab's management contract in 2005 (see story).

Walp said he is working on his doctoral dissertation, has served as an expert witness in several Santa Fe, N.M., cases and is writing a book about his experiences at Los Alamos.
