The IPv6 Forum has completed its first round of interoperability tests to ensure that IT products will work with networks using the new addressing architecture of the next-generation IP.

Companies in North America, Asia and Europe were included in the first listing of IPv6-Ready products. The program is in the first phase of testing for compliance with IP Version 6. Plans for more rigorous testing in Phase II are expected to be ready by June, officials with the standards organization said.

Most of the Internet now is using IP Version 4. Slowly, organizations are beginning to move toward IPv6, which offers expanded IP address space and improved security among other features. The Defense Department has announced plans to move to the new protocols by 2006.

The IPv6-Ready program is an effort by the IPv6 Forum to identify products ready to operate with the new protocols. Products will be eligible to display an IPv6-Ready logo.

The first phase is a self-test done by vendors to ensure minimum qualifications. The IPv6 Forum also does basic interoperability testing. The second phase probably will include testing by independent laboratories, the forum noted.

U.S. companies with products that have crossed the first testing hurdle include CheckPoint Software Technologies Ltd. of Redwood City, Calif.; Cisco Systems Inc. of San Jose, Calif.; Extreme Networks Inc. of Santa Clara, Calif.; Foundry Networks Inc. of San Jose, Calif.; Hewlett-Packard Co.; IBM Corp.; Intel Corp.; IP Infusion Inc. of San Jose, Calif.; Juniper Networks Inc. of Sunnyvale, Calif.; Microsoft Corp.; Procket Networks Inc. of Milpitas, Calif.; Sun Microsystems Inc.; and WindRiver Systems Inc. of Alameda, Calif.
