Advances in wireless and networked technologies'and the government's need for cybersecurity and interagency collaboration'dominated discussions at the 29th annual FOSE technology exposition April 5-7. An estimated 23,000 government professionals attended the three-day event at the Washington, D.C., Convention Center.
Chief executives from Intel Corp., Dell Inc., SAP America Inc. and Accenture Ltd. provided global technology perspectives while also pitching upcoming performance improvements. Paul Otellini, Intel's incoming CEO, noted that other nations are pulling ahead of the United States in the race for digital mobility, infrastructure and policy. Near-term, tech buyers can look forward to Intel's new 1.7 billion-transistor dual-core processor, due out later this year, and to the emerging ability to support 50-mile-wide wireless networking areas.
Meanwhile, federal information, financial, acquisition and human capital officers drew crowds to FOSE's E-Town and Homeland Security centers to listen to exchanges on topics from business modernization initiatives to securing cyberspace. Military solutions on wide-area workflow, knowledge management, information assurance and radio frequency identification also attracted packed audiences at the DOD Theater on the FOSE floor.
Security emerged as a major theme among suppliers and integrators. More than 100 of the 531 industry exhibits demonstrated security systems, including encryption and identification technologies. But a wide range of other technology products also were on display'from e-voting systems such as Comfidex Corp.'s VoteFiler to an ultrathin client activated by a smart card from Tadpole Computer.
