Connecting state and local government leaders

The Interior Department has embarked on a program to integrate and modernize its resources for managing map and geospatial data.

The Interior Department has embarked on a program to integrate and modernize its resources for managing map and geospatial data. The department recently established a formal governance structure that will coordinate geospatial activities across all the agency's bureaus. In a video presentation at a conference in Washington in February, Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne said that the department's geomapping data helped firefighters during last fall's wildfire outbreak in California. The National Interagency Fire Center (www.nifc.gov) in Boise, Idaho, fused land data from the U.S.Geological Survey with data from state and local sources to predict which way Santa Ana winds would blow. The agency is now undertaking a similar interagency effort with the National Weather Service to warn California residents of mudslides.Interior officials also touted the agency's GeoCommunicator (GCN.com/979) Web application. The joint project of the Bureau of Land Management and the Forest Service gives the public access to geotagged data from multiple agencies about federal lands, such as land and mineral use records, mining claims and the public land survey system. GeoCom has a number of new Web services, including one that allows users to paste geocoded government documents into the search service and get a map showing the areas and boundaries described in the text. Another new service offers a converse feature that can highlight an area on a map and have the service deliver pertinent documents from various agencies.CADnection, a California-based developer, has announced the release of its product of the same name. CADnection uses Microsoft SharePoint to make it easier to manage Autodesk AutoCAD projects via the Internet. AutoCAD users can check drawings and send files back and forth to SharePoint from directly within the AutoCAD interface. The solution also provides for quick search, view and launch of AutoCAD projects. Optional wizards guide the exchange processes between AutoCAD and SharePoint, including search, checkout and check-in activities, making the network easy to navigate.http://www.cadnection.com/AirPatrol is shipping what it describes as the first 'end-to-end, corporate-wide approach to wireless threat detection and mitigation.'Utilities in the suite are designed to defend systems against wireless-enabled intrusions, safeguard information stored on laptop PCs in the office and on the road, monitor networks and detect unauthorized wireless devices, and prevent wireless network service disruptions caused by interference in the Wi-Fi bands. The solution integrates with popular information technology security products and has Check Point OPSEC certification.http://www.airpatrolcorp.com/The Open Geospatial Consortium is requesting public comment on the CityGML encoding standard.CityGML is a markup language application schema for the storage and exchange of virtual 3-D city models.
