The Defense Logistics Agency has awarded its second electronic software distribution
contract to Beyond.com, formerly software.net, of Sunnyvale, Calif.
The latest DLA contract, whose value was not announced, follows a $50 million award to
the same company two years ago for up to 70,000 licenses for Microsoft Corp. desktop and
server packages plus software upgrades for up to five years.
Under the new agreement, the electronic distribution superstore will use its Enterprise
Download Manager to ship up to 45,000 licensed copies of intelligent disk defragmentation
and remote-monitoring software from Raxco Software Inc. of Gaithersburg, Md.
Raxcos instaNT defragmentation software puts the most frequently accessed
Microsoft Windows NT files near the center of the hard disk for faster access. Its remote
control capabilities let administrators view and modify Windows NT platforms from any
location on a network.
Beyond.com distributes commercial software to DLA users over the Internet at up to T3
speeds. DLA caches the software on internal servers running Microsoft Proxy Server,
Internet Information Server and Beyond.coms caching software.
LAN administrators have control of the software all the way down to the
clientits not push technology, said Don Beery, director of government
sales for Beyond.com.
The software must arrive at a specific port on a DLA firewall. They know where
were coming in, Beery said, and its not during the busiest time of
the day.
DLA saves on packaging, shipping, installation and maintenance by electronically
distributing the current and future versions of Windows NT Server, Exchange Server, SQL
Server, BackOffice, Internet Information Server, Office 97 and other Microsoft products,
Beery said. Upgrades are available the same day Microsoft releases them, he said.
Beyond.coms Internet-based software superstore sells more than 22,000 products,
including 2,200 titles available for immediate electronic delivery, company officials
said.
