OCT. 30'Micron Electronics Inc. today announced two significant shifts in its PC and server strategy.

The Nampa, Idaho, company will put Athlon processors from Advanced Micro Devices Inc. of Sunnyvale, Calif., instead of Intel Corp. processors, into its Millennia Max XP PCs, and it will shift its server line to a series of co-branded Hewlett-Packard NetServers.

Rob Meissner, director of product marketing, said the Athlon decision 'is about memory choices.' He said Intel's use of Rambus memory is half again more costly than AMD's double-data-rate synchronous dynamic RAM.

The Millennia Max XP will start around $1,500 with an 850-MHz Athlon. A 1.2-GHz version with 128M of SDRAM, a 20G hard drive, CD-RW and floppy drives, speakers and a 17-inch monitor will cost about $2,100.

The co-branded NetServers represent 'a fairly dramatic shift in our delivery of servers,' Meissner said. HP will do the core development and integration while Micron handles its own deliveries and customizes software image downloads. 'HP has a broader line of servers and peripherals,' he said.

The first three co-branded NetServers Micron will sell are the LH 6000 enterprise server, a two-way LC 2000 workgroup server and the high-density LPR rackmountable unit. For more information, go to www.micronpc.com.
