Navy CIO Richard Mayo is the front-runner to head the newly authorized Naval Network Warfare Command in Norfolk, Va.

At Naval IT Day yesterday in Vienna, Va., several admirals mentioned Mayo's name in connection with the new command, which will begin operations in June. Mayo is also the Navy's director of space, information warfare, command and control.

Speaking about transforming the service, Vice Adm. Dennis V. McGinn, deputy chief of naval operations for warfare requirements and programs, said the new command is a visionary development.

'Adm. Mayo will be commanding down in Norfolk,' McGinn said during his keynote address. Later, Rear Adm. John P. Cryer III, head of the Naval Space Command, also referred to Mayo as the new NETWARCOM leader.

Lt. Brauna Carl, a Navy spokeswoman, said, 'There are rumors to that effect, but nobody has been confirmed yet.'

NETWARCOM will oversee all Navy networks, information operations and space activities at the Naval Amphibious Base Little Creek in Norfolk, Va. Navy Secretary Gordon England authorized NETWARCOM last month [see story at www.gcn.com/vol1_no1/daily-updates/18317-1.html].

The new commander, who will be named by the White House and confirmed by the Senate, will be in charge of the Naval Network and Space Operations Command in Dahlgren, Va., the Fleet Information Warfare Center in Norfolk and the Navy Component Task Force Computer Network Defense in Washington. Other commands will report to the NETWARCOM head for fleet support matters.
