The commission has completed the final phase of its EDGAR modernization, it will continue to make upgrades and changes to the system as user requirements demand. Through the modernization, SEC sought to reduce the filing burden on companies required to submit financial data to the government. In 2000, the agency awarded Verizon Communications Inc. a $235,000 contract to install fiber links and ensure network security at SEC facilities in Alexandria, Va., and Washington. Data is transferred at a rate of 100 Mbps between the facilities, which are 10 miles apart. Under contracts with M-Cubed Information Systems Inc. of Rockville, Md., and Pragmatics Inc. of McLean, Va., SEC is decommissioning its IBM MVS mainframe, Sun Microsystems Sparc servers and Novell NetWare servers. It will migrate to a Microsoft Windows NT environment. Additionally, the commission will replace Adabas database software from Software AG of North America Inc. with System 11 from Sybase Inc. SEC plans to use commercial products to analyze large databases containing financial information. The agency will award a contract later this year to a vendor with software capable of producing reports; searching, analyzing and interpreting data; recognizing data patterns and historical trends and generating audit trails.
