Sometimes IT products aren't quite what they say they are. That was the case with the Dell P1500 executive laser printer that was evaluated in a GCN Lab review that ran late last month.

Sometimes IT products aren't quite what they say they are. That was the case with the Dell P1500 executive laser printer that was evaluated in a GCN Lab review that ran late last month.

The lab had requested Dell's P1500 laser, which matched our specifications for an executive-level or personal printer. A few days later, a printer arrived with the P1500 documentation and information for reviewers.

But what we had received was in fact a Dell S2500'another printer in the same line with better performance, more features and a higher price tag. The only indication was a stamp-sized black sticker in back that said S2500 in tiny type.

No one even noticed the tag until after the review was in print, and if a reader hadn't complained about an incorrect photograph, we might never have discovered the printer's real identity before we shipped it back.

Unfortunately, this mixup means that we must withdraw the B+ grade and Bang for the Buck designation from the $289 P1500'which was really the $499 S2500 workgroup laser printer.

The S2500 gets a new grade of B-, the same as the $499 Xerox Phaser 3400.
