Peter E. Jones, a retired Air Force colonel who specializes in Defense communications, has become vice president of federal systems at PhotonEx Corp., which develops 10- and 40-Gbps core optical networking systems.

Jones, a former Defense Information Systems Agency vice commander and DISA Western Hemisphere commander, will help the Maynard, Mass., company compete for a share of contracts under the Global Information Grid-Bandwidth Expansion project.

At DISA, Jones was responsible for consolidating 100 computer centers into 16 DISA-operated megacenters. As a communications specialist, he headed all computer and air traffic control operations for various Defense Department operations in Europe.

After more than 30 years of DOD communications experience, Jones worked as vice president of government markets for Comsat General Corp., which later became Lockheed Martin Global Telecommunications.

In a PhotonEx announcement, Jones said he was excited to continue his work in DOD communications. He said the PhotonEx core optical networking system 'is the most efficient and cost-effective way of addressing the government's need for reliable, high-bandwidth communications.'

The worldwide, ground-based GIG-BE network will require distance-insensitive transport, flexible high-bandwidth provisioning and information assurance, he said.

DISA plans to announce contract awards this fall for the backbone as well as hardware and software products and services. The switched optical network would support 10-Gbps OC-192 voice, data and image connections for DOD users worldwide.
