In two weeks, the Defense Department will hold a demonstration to test Horizontal Fusion, a portfolio of network-centric applications the department began working on earlier this year, Defense deputy CIO Priscilla Guthrie said today.

The goal of the experiment is to get Defense agencies to make the right information available to warfighters faster. The strategy is to make data available before it is processed, said Guthrie, who spoke at a breakfast sponsored by Input of Reston, Va., and PostNewsweek Tech Media.

Currently, intelligence analysts collect, process and analyze data before pushing it out to users, Guthrie said.

'People ought to be able to pull the picture that they need,' she said. 'We need to save the data and allow people to pull the data they want when they need it.'

John Stenbit, Defense CIO, explained his definition of Horizontal Fusion at a House Armed Services subcommittee hearing in April.

'The Horizontal Fusion Initiative will provide tools and means that integrate the smart pull of data with expert interpretations of that information,' Stenbit told Congress. 'It is aimed at providing the tools that allow users to identify what data is available, access it, smartly pull and fuse it, and make sense of the data gathered.'

Stenbit added that the tools would require a major investment in data content management and a heavy reliance on commercial applications.
