The National Defense University in Washington paid tribute to a legend this month with the dedication of the Grace M. Hopper Auditorium. The ceremony took place during the convocation of the school's Advanced Management Program, Class 28.
The National Defense University in Washington paid tribute to a legend this month with the dedication of the Grace M. Hopper Auditorium. The ceremony took place Jan. 12, during the convocation of the school's Advanced Management Program, Class 28.Hopper, who died in 1992, combined a naval career'retiring as a rear admiral'with groundbreaking work in computers. With a doctorate in mathematics from Yale University, she joined the Naval Reserve during World War II and worked on some of the Navy's first computers. After the war, she worked for Sperry Rand Corp., developing language for the Univac computers. She returned to the Navy in 1967 and was instrumental in developing the Cobol programming language. [IMGCAP(4)]The auditorium, in the university's Marshall Hall, seats 75 and holds an array of computer, audiovisual and videoconferencing technology.According to the NDU web site, AMP students come from all over the world and from a wide variety of governmental and non-government organizations. The fourteen-week graduate level AMP courses provide functional and technical information resource managers with an integrated understanding of policies and imperatives, such as the Clinger-Cohen Act of 1996, and their impact on the organization. [IMGCAP(2)]Graduates will be prepared to form effective managerial partnerships to ensure effective allocation and application of information resources to mission requirements in compliance with policy, regulatory, and ethical standards.
