The CIO and the Industry Advisory councils yesterday gave the Excellence.Gov award for governance to five federal IT projects.<br>

The CIO and the Industry Advisory councils yesterday gave the Excellence.Gov award for governance to five federal IT projects.

The annual awards recognize e-government projects that are innovative and mature, demonstrate measurable results, impact the agency's mission and can be copied by other organizations. The projects must have a governance model focusing on IT and business decision-making.

Of 90 nominees, a panel of industry and federal managers chose 25 finalists. The top five were:

  • Businesslaw.gov, the Small Business Administration's portal where businesses can obtain state and federal employer identification numbers. The site has saved the government more than $500,000 in the nine months since its launch, SBA officials said.


  • Disaster Management, the Homeland Security Department's Quicksilver project that provides disaster-related information and services to improve preparedness, mitigation and response. The site has information-sharing tools for emergency responders.


  • Electronic Data Gathering, Analysis and Retrieval, the Securities and Exchange Commission's system that has reduced a 90-day wait to process buy-and-sell transactions by substantial owners of stocks. Individuals can file online, cutting the time it takes to disseminate information to investors.


  • Federal Technical Data Solution, a Defense Department and Defense Information Systems Agency system to put technical drawings online for vendor-agency collaboration. The program is a component of the Integrated Acquisition Environment e-gov project.


  • National Practitioner Data Bank and Healthcare Integrity and Protection Data Bank, databases established by the Health and Human Services Department to disseminate adverse information about physicians, dentists and other health practitioners, providers and suppliers.
