Through its purchase of Cardiff Software Inc., Verity Inc. plans to bring business intelligence to electronics form-based workflow systems.

Through its purchase of Cardiff Software Inc., Verity Inc. plans to bring business intelligence to electronics form-based workflow systems.

Combining the products will let agencies get a better handle on the information being collected in e-forms before the content is stored in databases, said Andy Feit, Verity's senior vice president of marketing.

Verity of Sunnyvale, Calif., announced the acquisition yesterday. The deal, worth $50 million, is expected to close within 60 days.

Verity's software has been used by the departments of Energy, State and Transportation, the Federal Communications Commission, the Geological Survey, the General Services Administration, the IRS and NASA.

Cardiff's government users include the Army, the departments of Energy and Justice, and California.

Verity's flagship product is Ultraseek, a search engine for internal enterprise use that offers data mining and clustering features.

Cardiff's LiquidOffice software is used for creating electronic forms, as well as for routing and tracking forms. Cardiff also makes software that converts paper documents into electronic ones, inserting them into the automated workflow.

With Verity's data-mining capabilities and Cardiff's workflow software, managers will be able to see trends and pull interesting information from forms when they enter the system, Feit said.

'It gets us closer to the origin of that content,' he said. 'Whereas everyone else is waiting for that point where the content is published and then crawling it or accessing it to try to make heads or tails of it, we'll be able to do that in real time.'
