The IRS launched a new online form today to speed the turnaround of tax professionals' applications to become authorized electronic filers.
The form cuts processing time and reduces errors associated with using the paper Form 8633, IRS officials said. After the IRS has approved a tax preparer's application, the tax professional immediately can begin filing returns electronically for clients.
'With record numbers of Americans filing electronically, this process makes it even easier for tax professionals to become an authorized e-filer,' IRS commissioner Mark Everson said.
The new online form is but one of several online forms the IRS has created for tax professionals. Earlier online forms let tax preparers register to create electronic accounts, apply for preparer tax identification numbers, and check in bulk that the names and corresponding taxpayer ID numbers of a group of taxpayers are correct.
The online forms are part of a suite of business electronic services the IRS plans to roll out over the next several weeks and into the summer for businesses that regularly submit more than 100 returns.
The e-services set for release soon include:
- Disclosure authorization: Eligible tax professionals can complete, view and update authorization forms, and immediately receive acknowledgement of accepted submissions.
- Electronic account resolution: Tax professionals can resolve clients' account problems by electronically sending and receiving account-related information. They will be able to ask about individual or business accounts, refunds, installment agreements, missing payments and notices. The IRS will respond via e-mail within 72 hours.
- Transcript delivery system: Tax professionals can request their clients' tax return transcripts, account transcripts, wage and income documents and verification of non-filing letters. Account information is provided in a secure, online session or can be delivered via e-mail within 48 hours.
