Deadline for submitting input for a paper on federal use of XML is Friday.

Want to get your groundbreaking extensible markup language-based project some recognition? Better act quickly: The deadline for submitting input for a paper on federal use of XML is tomorrow.

The paper, 'How the U.S. Federal Government is Using XML: One Year Later,' will be presented in November at the XML 2004 conference in Washington


'The purpose of the paper is to show how selected U.S. federal agencies are using XML in a very wide variety of ways. It will also reflect the various motivations for using this technology,' wrote paper author Ken Sall by e-mail. Sall is an XML specialist for consulting firm SiloSmashers Inc. of Vienna, Va., which is funding the report.

Sall sent out a notice earlier this week on the Federal CIO Council's XML Working Group mailing list about the upcoming deadline. Thus far, agencies such as the General Services Administration, the Internal Revenue Service, Justice Department and NASA have contributed, according to Sall.

'All input providers will be credited (unless they state otherwise) and URLs to your activities will be included,' he wrote.

This paper follows up on a similar one Sall completed last year, How the U.S. Federal Government is Using XML.
That report outlined agencies' motivations for adapting XML, a directory of e-government initiatives that use XML, a list of XML registries being developed, as well as a number of case studies of XML usage

'The emphasis this year is on updating information previously presented,' Sall wrote. 'XML technologies are maturing, as is the knowledge of government developers. There may be some lessons learned as well.'
