Library of Congress picks eight contractors for digital archiving

The Library of Congress has chosen eight teams to participate in its digital preservation program, awarding almost $15 million.
The Library of Congress has chosen eight teams to participate in its digital preservation program, awarding almost $15 million to the groups. The institutions will help the library identify, collect and preserve materials that only exist electronically.
The awards are part of the $100 million appropriation made to the Library of Congress in 2000 to preserve digital materials. (See GCN coverage here.) The National Digital Information Infrastructure and Preservation Program will archive electronic materials such as Web pages, satellite maps and aerial photography, television shows, opinion polls and voting records.
The teams that won awards are led by:
- University of California at Oakland: The university will collect government-related Web materials. Approximate award amount: $2.7 million.
- University of California at Santa Barbara: This team will collect geographic material. Award amount: $2.7 million.
- Educational Broadcasting Corp. of New York: EBC leads a team, including the Public Broadcasting Service of Alexandria, Va., that will preserve public television programs. Award amount: $2.8 million.
- Emory University of Atlanta: This group will focus on preserving electronic materials dealing with southern U.S. culture and history. Award amount: $690,000.
- University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign: This team will develop criteria to help determine which materials are worth preserving. Award amount: $2.6 million.
- University of Maryland of College Park: This team will focus on collecting business-related online materials that represent the 'dot.com' era between 1994 and 2001. Amount of award: $220,000.
- University of Michigan of Ann Arbor: This group will preserve opinion polls, voting records, large-scale surveys on family growth and income and sociological studies. Award amount: $2.1 million.
- North Carolina State University of Raleigh: This group will collect and preserve geospatial data resources created by state and local governments. Award amount: $530,00.
