The Army's Network Enterprise Technology Command has awarded a one-year blanket purchasing agreement to CDW Government Inc. for wireless devices and peripherals.The BPA has no ceiling, and Army organizations can place orders worth as much as $5 million apiece, according to the Herndon, Va., company. The wireless devices feature Java operating systems and meet Federal Information Processing Standard 140-2 for securing sensitive but unclassified data. Among the handhelds available will be BlackBerrys from Research in Motion Ltd. of Waterloo, Ontario, and Treo 650s from PalmOne Inc. of Milpitas, Calif. CDW-G will also provide software, hardware accessories and middleware. The Army will preapprove all products sold through the BPA. For added security, the BlackBerrys come equipped with smart-card readers from Appriva of Columbus, N.J., and Infinite Peripherals Inc. of Irvine, Calif. NETCOM is handling the Army's buys for wireless devices and services, said Gordon Van Vleet, a public affairs officer at the command.. The Defense Department is searching for a contractor to provide engineering services for its electromagnetic spectrum management center.The buy is a follow-on to a contract first awarded in August 2000. The Joint Spectrum Center in Annapolis, Md., has issued a request for proposals for a wide range of services related to the government's management and use of the spectrum. Bids are due this week. The estimated value is $661 million for a 10-year contract with a three-year base period and seven one-year options. The current $276 million contract, awarded to Alion Science and Technology of McLean, Va., expires in August. The Joint Spectrum Center's mission is to ensure that the Defense Department uses radio spectrum efficiently and effectively. . The Air Force has awarded NCI Information Systems Inc. of Reston, Va., a four-year, $4.3 million contract for IT support for its 10th Medical Group. NCI will provide on-site technical services to the medical group at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo. The service awarded the task order under its Network-Centric Solutions Program. The deal is the first win for NCI under NetCents, company president Michael Solley said. The 10th Medical Group provides medical and dental services to more than 125,000 people, including active-duty officers and their dependents, retirees and more than 4,000 cadets.
