Williams to become deputy CIO at Agriculture

The Agriculture Department is getting a new deputy CIO just as its current one is leaving. Jerry Williams, the Small Business Administration's acting CIO, will start June 27.

The Agriculture Department is getting a new deputy CIO just as its current one is leaving.

Jerry Williams, the Small Business Administration's acting CIO, will start June 27. But Williams is not sure who his boss will be because President Bush appointed Scott Charbo, the current USDA CIO, as the new technology executive for the Homeland Security Department.

Williams has been with SBA since July 2003 and moved into the acting CIO role in August 2004.

'The time was right to move on,' he said. 'We've been pretty successful here and the agency is well-seated to continue to be green on the President's Management Agenda scorecard.'

Williams said no decision has been made as to who the new acting CIO would be at SBA.

Stephen Galvan, the former CIO and current chief of staff, could bring these duties back under his purview for the time being.

Williams steps into the position previously held by Ira Hobbs, who became the CIO of Treasury last June. David Combs had been acting deputy CIO since Hobbs' departure.

'USDA is a great opportunity to do a lot of great things, and it will be a brand new experience for me,' Williams said.

While at SBA, Williams led the design and implementation of the online 8(a) program application and helped push the agency toward green under the PMA scorecard.

Before coming to SBA, Williams was chief of the Federal Financial Management Systems Branch at the Office of Management and Budget. He began his federal career in 1984 with the Defense Department.

Williams attended Cheyney University in Pennsylvania and Troy State University in Alabama, majoring in accounting and public administration. He also holds a professional certification in financial management.
