Top regional military commanders and senior Pentagon officials gathered in Washington this month to begin putting the final touches on the upcoming Quadrennial Defense Review.The Senior Defense Leaders' Conference was hosted by Defense secretary Donald Rumsfeld and Marine Gen. Peter Pace, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. The conference came a month before senior leaders are to present the report to Congress.The QDR is a study and report conducted every four years that lays out a 20-year projection for Defense transformation.In the 2001 QDR, Rumsfeld called for increased spending on technology and a bigger focus on space and cyberspace programs. The new QDR will draw on lessons learned from the war against terrorism, seeking to identify new technologies that will be instrumental in aiding war- fighters, Defense officials said.The Army has awarded a five-year, $90 million contract to Anteon International Corp. of Fairfax, Va., to provide U.S. Forces Korea Joint Command Information Systems Activity with support for C4I, or command, control, communications, computers and intelligence.The project will support both U.S. forces and Republic of Korea forces in operations meant to deter North Korean aggression.Anteon will provide support the Army's command and control of about 687,000 combat-ready troops on the Korean peninsula via net-centric, high-speed connectivity among sites supporting both Korean and U.S. forces.The Navy has granted Lockheed Martin Corp. a $144.3 million contract modification on a previously awarded deal for the development and demonstration phase of an acoustic undersea surveillance system that can cover vast ocean areas for an extended period.The company's maritime systems and sensors division in Manassas, Va., will perform design and systems engineering services for the Advanced Deployable System program.The system is designed to provide quick and covertly deployable undersea surveillance to operational forces in regional conflicts.
