Here's a sampling of the technology sessions taking place this week. If you miss one, chances are there will be a re-run during the show, so check your program.
Tuesday, March 7
10 a.m.: Wireless Security. Cisco Systems Inc.'s morning session, 'Deploying Secure Wireless Networks to Support Federal Agency Mobility,' should shine some light on the thorny problem of protecting information assets when people need network access wherever they happen to be working. Room 159A.
10 a.m.: Secure Linux. Hewlett-Packard Co.'s presentation, 'New Direction in Linux Security,' will actually be given by a senior solutions architect from Red Hat Inc. On the agenda is a high-level look at what makes Security Enhanced Linux (SELinux), developed in conjunction with the National Security Agency, a more locked-down operating system than some others out there. Room 149A.
11 a.m.: SQL Server 2005. Microsoft Corp. plans to spend time discussing the new business intelligence features in SQL Server 2005, including data integration, analytics and reporting services. The GCN Lab has taken a look at SQL Server 2005 and liked what it saw (go to GCN.com and type 548 in the GCN.com/box). Room 152B.
11:15 a.m.:: Non-SQL Server. The folks at HP have brought along another interesting third party. The folks from MySQL Federal will talk about deployments at several agencies of its open-source database program. Room 153.
1 p.m.: Autodesk Keynote. Carol Bartz, president and CEO of the computer-aided design giant, will talk about how the company's solutions are helping agencies with data sharing needs. (For a preview of her comments, read GCN's exclusive interview, Page 54.) Rooms 146B and C.
3 p.m.: Federated Identities. Sun Microsystems Inc. and Advanced Micro Devices Inc. plan to talk about how this cross-platform authentication scheme can help agencies with various compliance efforts. Enterprise Booth 2631, Theater C.
Wednesday, March 8
9 a.m.: Sun Keynote. Always entertaining, Sun Microsystems CEO Scott McNealy plans to discuss what the Internet has evolved into and the organizational implications of the 'Web 2.0.' Rooms 146B and C.
10 a.m.: JBoss. This open-source application server has drawn a lot of interest lately. HP will host a session about JBoss and other popular open-source middleware programs such as Apache. Room 153.
10 a.m.: Videoconferencing. Face-to-face, IP-based communication is more possible (and secure) than ever. InfoComm International and Tandberg will discuss the latest International Telecommunication Union standards for routing H.323 and Session Initiation Protocol among disparate, secure networks. Room 151A.
11 a.m.: Geographic Information Systems. Microsoft says it will provide real-world examples of how agencies are using its MapPoint technology and Visual Earth services to incorporate location-based information into their operations. Room 152B.
11:45 a.m.: Macromedia Flex 2.0. Adobe Systems Inc. and Macromedia Inc. recently merged, so it's Adobe representatives who will be showing a prerelease version of Flex 2.0, which agencies can use to create richer online applications. Room 155.
1 p.m.: Cisco Keynote. They tell us that CEO John Chambers will emphasize mobility solutions during his FOSE address. And he will reportedly stream in news from this week's VoiceCon conference about important new Cisco technologies. Rooms 146B and C.
2 p.m.: IPv6 Migration. When Chambers is done, stroll over to Cisco's presentation on IPv6 integration issues. Room 159A.
2 p.m.: An Actual RFID User Who's Not DOD. Radio frequency identification remains fairly niche, but in this session, the Social Security Administration is scheduled to talk about how it uses RFID. Room 148.
4 p.m.: GCN Best of FOSE Awards. After combing the show floor, GCN and GCN Lab reviewers will reveal their favorite products and crown one Best of Show. Radio Booth 651.
Thursday, March 9
10:30 a.m.: Data Center Issues. American Power Conversion Corp. will discuss 'Strategies for Successfully Deploying High-Density Applications,' with a focus on blade servers and server consolidation. Data Center Pavilion Theater, Booth 1517.
11 a.m.: Windows Security. Microsoft will help users understand ways of securing their XP and 2003 environments by avoiding administrator log-ins. Room 152B.
