At a press conference held today, Intel CEO Paul Otellini unveiled their first enterprise platform brand. Named vPro, the new platform will include Active Management Technology, virtualization, the upcoming Conroe microprocessor and the Intel Core 64-bit processor into a business desktop.

At a press conference held today, Intel CEO Paul Otellini unveiled their first enterprise platform brand. Named vPro, the new platform will include Active Management Technology, virtualization, the upcoming Conroe microprocessor and the Intel Core 64-bit processor into a business desktop.

'We think it's time to reinvent the desktop,' said Otellini. Otellini said the new develops were partially spurred on by the rise in popularity of laptops over desktops. The vPro platform will focus primarily on three key categories: built-in management capabilities, proactive security and energy efficiency.

Intel's Active Management Technology, hardware allows agents to continue functioning even when something tries to shut them down forcibly by an attack or when a user disables them on purpose, such as when a patch is applied that requires anti-virus software to be disabled for installation. Symantec'whose CEO was on-hand to support the announcement'would be working with the Intel to develop a security solution consisting of a virtualized isolated environment outside of the main PC operation system to allow better, more proactive security. Lastly, the Conroe microprocessors claim two times the relative performance of Pentium 4 chips and nearly four times the performance-per-watt, a metric that gauges power usage in comparison to processing power.

'By announcing the brand today' we're giving the enterprise customers enough time to test the technology.' said Tom Kilroy, of Intel's Digital Enterprise Group. 'It also allows us to promote the brand.' Kilroy mentioned that there will be a large marketing campaign to introduce the vPro brand to businesses.

Conroe microprocessors and vPro will be coming out in the third quarter of this year. They are currently in beta tests with private businesses.
