Word out of Boston this week is that enterprises may want to wait until 2008 to migrate users to Windows Vista, which is due out later this year (although not for consumers).

Boston-based Yankee Group just released an in-depth report called "Microsoft's Vista Won't Stop the Windows Security Aftermarket," and although the main thrust is that third-party security programs (think anti-spyware, client firewalls, etc.) will feel a shake-up when Vista launches, the part that's getting all the attention is Yankee Group's assertion that the new security measures in Vista are so different, they could turn some users off.

According to the research firm, Vista's new User Account Control, for one, could discourage IT shops even though it's designed to improve security by limiting user privileges.

Analyst Andrew Jaquith writes that, "Although the new security system shows promise, it is far too chatty and annoying."

But let's be clear, people have been hammering Microsoft to improve security for years and the company is making major strides. Yes, new measures could take some getting used to, but even Yankee Group estimates that Vista could reduce vulnerabilities by up to 80 percent.

We'll see.
