Treasury Department CIO Ira Hobbs will retire Jan. 3, the department confirmed today. Hobbs has been Treasury CIO since June 2004, after two decades at the Agriculture Department.At Treasury, Hobbs oversaw the department's $2.6 billion IT portfolio, expanding skilled management for capital planning and information management, cybersecurity and e-government.Prior to his work at Treasury, he had been deputy CIO for seven years at USDA, sharing responsibility for the overall management for the department's IT resources. Hobbs also held several positions within USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service in IT, administrative services and human resources.Hobbs exemplified leadership at its finest during his tenure at USDA, said Chris Niedermayer, USDA's associate CIO for information and technology management. Hobbs took the time to establish relationships with all within his organizations and, as a result, earned their loyalty and support when the department needed it to address many challenges. "He provided the right balance of guidance with independence to permit staff to grow and develop their own unique capabilities. He is the kind of person that makes you proud to be a public servant and gladly give a little more to advance efforts that are for the public good," Niedermayer said. Hobbs co-chairs the Federal CIO Council's Workforce and Human Capital for IT Committee, which works to improve the recruitment, retention and skills of the federal government's IT workforce.Hobbs also had been recognized as a leader in helping to make Agriculture citizen centered and performance based. He received Agriculture's Honor Award for Superior Service in 2000, 1996 and 1985.Hobbs has received numerous other awards including the President's Award for Outstanding Public Service, presented by the American Society for Public Administration National Capital Area Chapter in 2004; the John J. Franke Outstanding Executive Award in 2003; and Outstanding Individual Government Contributor of the Year, presented by the Industry Advisory Council in 2001.He is a past president of the Association for Federal Information Resources Management and the conference co-chair of the 2005 Industry Advisory Council's Executive Leadership Conference.Hobbs received a bachelor's degree in political science from Florida A&M University and a master's of public administration from Florida State University in Tallahassee.
