Green Grid pushes energy efficiency

Nonprofit consortium releases white papers focused on advancing energy efficiency in data centers.
The Green Grid, a nonprofit consortium focused on advancing energy efficiency in data centers and business computing, has completed three key deliverables it will make available to members.According to the consortium's Technical Committee the deliverables are white papers titled:
In ' Qualitative Analysis of Power Distribution Configurations,' Green Grid identifies seven high-level configurations for power distribution in the data center. The paper is one of the first to consolidate the advantages and disadvantages of each of these power distribution configurations, officials said.The 'Existing Data Center Energy Efficiency Metrics' white paper is the industry's first consolidated look at all existing organizations and metrics that address energy efficiency in data centers and related information technology equipment. Green Grid will use this research to determine what areas are currently being addressed and have the greatest need for energy efficiency metrics.The updated version of the 'Data Center Efficiency Metrics' white paper expands on metrics first introduced by Green Grid in February. It more explicitly highlights infrastructure efficiency, consortium officials said. Green Grid hopes that the Power Usage Effectiveness and Datacenter Efficiency metrics will be adopted by the industry and, moving forward, all data centers will track and report their efficiencies using these metrics.The Green Grid also entered into a memorandum of understanding with the Information Technology Council, an organization dedicated to public policy advocacy for leading high-tech companies. The two organizations hope to align their positions and affirm the respective and distinct role each plays to help the IT industry address the demand for energy efficiency.Last month, Green Grid and the Energy Department's Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy announced a collaborative effort to improve energy efficiency by educating IT managers on both the technical implementation of a greener data center and the associated financial benefits. Green Grid and DOE will develop a common set of best practice information, terminology and tools to promote increased energy efficiency in U.S. data center facilities.Green Grid has now grown to 102 members since its launch in February. New members in the past month include Alpikom SpA, Cassatt, Forsythe Solutions Group, Green Data Systems, Sepaton and ServerVault.The consortium will also participate in the grand opening today of the Schneider Electric Technology Center, a state-of-the art testing facility in O'Fallon, Mo., that will be made available to the Green Grid to further aid the consortium's Technical Committee.
