GCN Lab review: Fresh from its Best New Technology Award at FOSE 2008, the Fujitsu LifeBook P8010 has a great form factor that combines a lot of useful features in a 2-pound, 15-ounce package.

FRESH FROM ITS at FOSE 2008, the Fujitsu LifeBook P8010 has a great form factor that combines a lot of useful features in a 2-pound, 15-ounce package.Surprisingly, even with its small, light form factor, the P8010 has great battery life. In our near-worst-case-scenario battery testing, it was able to survive 3 hours, 30 minutes, putting it on the higher end of battery performance.Quite a few features are packed into the P8010, leaving us to wonder how everything was included in such a lightweight system. For example, its integrated webcam is able to capture some pretty good images, and the 12.1- inch Crystal View Wide XGA LCD makes them look even better. Images on the screen are vibrant whether you are right in front of the laptop or across the room. In fact, with all the laptops lined up for performance testing, we found our eyes constantly drawn to the P8010's vivid display.There is also a dual-layer multiformat DVD writer, which puts its capabilities on par with those of some desktop systems. The standard package includes 802.11a/b/g wireless and the draft-n specification so it's ready for any wireless network you are likely to find now or in the near future.The P8010's Achilles' heel is its lukewarm performance. With a decent score of 244.2 on the PassMark benchmarks, it can handle most tasks. But this was one of the worst scores in the review. Therefore if you are doing any high-end tasks, you might want to consider a different laptop.But price may tempt you back to the Lifebook. At just $2,009 as configured for our review, it's a good value for a light, thin laptop.
