NEXCOM adds data warehouse

The Navy Exchange Service Command (NEXCOM) will be using Netezza Corp.'s data warehouse system as its enterprise data warehouse (EDW).
The data warehouse will analyze data from the agency's global network of 305 stores and 1,200 service operations located on 104 naval installations. NEXCOM is a world-wide $2.5 billion chain of retail stores and hotels offering services for active-duty sailors, reservists, retirees and their family members.
'We needed a high-performance EDW infrastructure that could scale as the number of users and data volumes increased to maintain the quality of our services and support,' said Kean Westcott, senior vice president and chief information officer at NEXCOM. 'As a retailer, NEXCOM needs the ability to make sound decisions around initiatives such as customer relationship management and supply chain management.'
Technology solutions provider Y'mar' is deploying the Netezza solution, which is specifically designed for high-performance, terascale analytics. The system integrates a relational database, server and storage into a single unit. The Netezza solution also uses patented streaming architecture, enabling data analysis at streaming speeds 10 to 100 times faster than conventional systems.
Separately, NEXCOM launched a new program to trade in unwanted eligible electronics and computer equipment for gift cards worth the value of the item. The ecoNew program offers trade-ins for small- to medium-sized electronics. Items that do not qualify for trade-in will be accepted for recycling.
The program is operated by N.E.W. Customer Service Companies. Electronic equipment taken from consumers will be reconditioned or recycled; some may be sold on the secondary market or disassembled and sold off as usable service parts. Others may be broken down into raw material and used to produce new items. Other retailers using ecoNew include Sam's Club and Office Depot.
