GCN names its Executives of the Year
Connecting state and local government leaders
Government Computer News has named four individuals to be honored with “Executive of the Year” and “Hall of Fame” awards -- in addition to the year's top government IT projects -- at the 22nd annual GCN Awards ceremony, October 22 in Washington, DC.
Government Computer News has named four individuals to be honored with “Executive of the Year” and “Hall of Fame” awards at the 22nd annual GCN Awards ceremony, Oct. 22 in Washington, DC.
The GCN Executives of the Year for 2009 are:
- DoD Executive of the Year: Robert Carey, Chief Information Officer, Department of the Navy
- Civilian Executive of the Year: Martha A. Dorris, Deputy Associate Administrator, Office of Citizen Services and Communications, GSA
- Industry Executive of the Year: James Lewis, Director and Senior Fellow, Technology and Public Policy Program, Center for Strategic and International Studies
- Hall of Fame Awardee 2009: Honorable Tom Davis, Federal Government Relations Director, Deloitte, and former Congressman of Virginia.
“Each of these executives of the year, through their leadership and by their example, have made a significant impact this past year in showing how information technology can be more effectively harnessed by the Government,” said Wyatt Kash, editor in chief of Government Computer News. “The induction of former Virginia Congressman, Tom Davis into GCN’s Hall of Fame reflects his long-standing contributions to the Government IT community —particularly in his role as Chairman of the House Government Reform Committee.”
In addition, the GCN Awards Gala will honor more than 20 government agencies whose information technology achievements in the past year have earned a GCN Award for outstanding accomplishments. The winning agencies and projects include:
- IT teams from Department of Interior/General Services Administration/Environmental Protection Agency/Office of Management and Budget -Data.gov Project Team for the Data.gov Project
- U.S. Army - MC4 Product Management Office for Medical Communications for Combat Care (MC4)
- Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) Personnel Systems Support Branch - Manpower, Personnel, and Security Directorate for Open Source Corporate Management Information System (OSCMIS)
- Department of Defense Military Health System – Defense Health Systems for their Patient Movement Items Tracking System
- Library of Congress – Office of Strategic Initiative for their Digital Preservation Project
- United States Postal Service (USPS) – Business Solutions Services for their Product Tracking system (PTS) Application Modernization
- The Department of Administrative Services – Division of Finance for the Utah Public Finance Web site
- Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) – Criminal Justice Information Services for the National Data Exchange (N-Dex)
- Department of State, Bureau of Consular Affairs – Consular Systems and Technology for the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI): Passport Card and Border Crossing Card (BCC)
- U.S. Customs and Border Protection – Office of Information Technology for their Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI)
- Rapid Reaction Technology Office (RRTO), Director, Defense Research & Engineering (DDR&E), Defense Technical Information Center (DTIC), Department of Defense Chief Information Officer - DoD Techipedia Team for the DoDTechipedia Suite of Services
Ten other projects will receive honorable mention awards. In addition, more than two dozen “Rising Stars” – individuals whose work is making a difference in the government IT sector—will also be recognized.

The awards will be presented at the GCN Awards Gala on October 22, 2009 at the Washington Hilton and Towers.
