WinZip for Windows 8 adds cloud, social media support
Connecting state and local government leaders
The new version lets Windows 8 users open, save and zip files from the cloud, and AES encryption allows them to be shared securely on social media and collaboration sites.
Two of the hottest trends in government are the move to the cloud, with all the services that entails, and using social media more effectively. But even with these new technologies offering more capacity than a local machine, reducing file sizes for efficient data transfer and storage is still a priority, as is trying to manage all those cloud-based accounts at the same time.
That’s why agencies might be interested in the latest update for the WinZip program, which adds support for the cloud and works just fine on tablets running both Windows 8 and Windows RT.
With direct integration of Dropbox, Google Drive, SkyDrive, LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook, the new WinZip for Windows 8 app enables users to interact with multiple cloud services and social media channels, all from within one application screen. The new version of the software also works with any Windows RT device, and is available in the Windows Online Store.
“The new WinZip for Windows 8 simplifies file sharing on Windows 8 devices by giving users a central hub for all your file sharing needs,” Patrick Nichols, president of WinZip, said in a release.
WinZip for Windows 8 lets users take advantage of WinZip compression, encryption and extensive cloud service integration to open .zip and .zipx files from the cloud. Files also can be saved or zipped from the cloud, and files, and folders that exist within the cloud can now be easily added to local .zip or .zipx files.
Files in the cloud can now be encrypted using WinZip with either 128-bit or 256-bit AES encryption to secure confidential files, whether they’re sent by e-mail, shared online or stored locally.
The ZipSend service allows large files to be automatically zipped and sent. And any type of file can be securely sent and shared on Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn with the ZipShare part of the program. And because WinZip for Windows 8 supports .zipx archiving, files can be compressed to the maximum extent possible.
Users can try the new WinZip for free for 15 days by downloading a copy from the Windows Store. After that, it costs $7.99 per year.
