Epson enrolls new 3D projectors into the classroom

The company’s new models produce active and passive 3D displays, which can help increase student learning and retention.
It seems like the whole world is obsessed with 3D technology these days. But beyond just enhancing blue aliens and gun battles at the movies, the technology can find a good home in educational and training settings. How much better would it be to observe a molecule or a gear in 3D than to see them displayed flat on a screen? Quite a lot better, most likely, which is why Epson has created two new 3D projectors specifically for classroom settings.
The PowerLite W16 and W16SK both project 3D images, but one is based on active 3D technology and the other on passive 3D. The W16 is the active model, so the 3D glasses it uses are powered by batteries and are a bit bulkier than passive ones. The W16SK model is actually two projectors stacked on top of one another, which allows for passive 3D and the type of normal, cheaper 3D glasses you probably are used to from the movie theater.
By offering both an active and a passive model, Epson is able to provide more choices for educators. Both the PowerLite W16 and W16SK deliver WXGA widescreen resolution and, unlike most 3D-ready projectors, support multiple HDMI 3D formats out of the box, with no external converter box required.
“Studies have shown that 3D in education is on the rise, and 3D lessons increase student learning and retention,” said Sara Kim, Epson America’s associate product manager for K-12 education marketing.
The Epson PowerLite W16 is designed for educators interested in an active 3D projection setup and offers sharp image quality, brightness and ease of use with Epson’s active shutter 3D RF glasses. The PowerLite W16 also offers a dynamic 2D visual experience with 3,000 lumens of color brightness and white light output. The PowerLite W16 requires minimal set-up with automatic vertical and horizontal keystone correction, 3-in-1 USB plug and play, and the option to install it or use it as a portable projector.
The PowerLite W16SK dual projection system is the industry’s only stacked projector kit available today made specifically for education. This highly cost effective 3D solution includes two projectors, polarizing lenses and a stack mount to deliver ultra-bright passive 3D projection. Students can use inexpensive passive 3D glasses, priced at only $3 a pair and sold as a box of five pairs. It delivers up to 6,000 lumens of color brightness and white light output in 2D mode when stacked, because the two units work together to overcome any lighting environment, even a well-lit classroom.
The Epson PowerLite W16 retails for $849 while the W16SK dual projector setup sells for $1,899. Both are available now.
