Connecting state and local government leaders

We’re looking to honor 50 individuals and teams in state and local government from around the United States who have demonstrated excellence in implementing great ideas. Enter by Friday, July 1!

When we were thinking about how to design a state and local government awards program for the Government Executive Media Group’s Route Fifty, we wanted to do something a little different.

Instead of simply honoring an individual for their overall excellence and record of good work, for the Route Fifty Navigator Awards, we’re going to focus on how an individual or teams of individuals implemented a great idea in the state and local government space. Coming up with a great idea is one thing. Being able to make it happen is another.

So we want to honor those who are making things happen and improving their communities in the process.

But we need your help to find great individuals and teams across the United States to honor. The nominations submission deadline has been extended to Friday, July 1.

We’re looking for individuals and teams in these five categories:

  • State and Local Executive Leadership
  • IT and Data Innovators
  • Agency and Department Chiefs
  • The Next Generation
  • Government Allies and Cross-Sector Partners

We’ll announce our 50 finalists in mid-July, and from that pool select 10 winners (2 per category) this fall.

While we’ll be looking for a wide-range of qualities in individual nominees and team nominees, there are two particular driving principles that are important to keep front and center:

  1. When it comes to examining the who, what, when, why and how of the implementation of an innovative idea, we’re particularly interested in “how.” What were the important steps along the way? What were the lessons learned? How could another jurisdiction take the innovative idea and adopt it? Basically, how did the nominee do what they did? Nominations should detail the how and include supporting documents, like official reports or news coverage.
  2. While it’s great to be the first person or team to develop a great idea, we’re also looking for individuals and teams who have been inspired by what another government has pioneered, adopted it and adapted it for success in for the community they serve. A good idea is a good idea, regardless of its origins. Show us how a great idea developed in one place was improved upon elsewhere. We want to be able to map the transformation of a good idea across jurisdictional borders.
