The Army's enterprise intranet portal is providing speedier service to 1.2 million users.

A noncommissioned Army officer in Afghanistan, up for a promotion, was reviewing his personnel file on the Army Knowledge Online portal recently when he noticed an important document missing.

The officer knew he had a copy of the paper file back home, and he needed to get it posted on the site fast. So he e-mailed his wife and asked her to fax the document to the personnel department for them to add to his online file.

Within 48 hours, the document had been digitized and posted, said Lt. Gen. Peter M. Cuviello, the Army's CIO, in a speech today in Washington at the Network Centric Warfare 2003 conference sponsored by the Institute for Defense and Government Advancement. Cuviello said the same process would have taken about six months a few years ago, when the process was done on paper.

Everyone in the Army can access this type of speedy service now through AKO, the Army's enterprise intranet portal. All 1.2 million of the service's active and civilian employees have accounts on the intranet, Cuviello said.

The portal provides free Web e-mail, Army news articles, banking information and many other services. There is a job bank and an application to track deployment days, and the portal also lets users review or change certain personnel functions.
