USGS' real-time water quality monitoring

Few agencies are as well suited to take advantage of the
geospatial capabilities of the Web as the U.S. Geological Survey.
The latest example of that is the agency's new
WaterQualityWatch Web site at water.usgs.gov/waterwatch/wqwatch .

The site offers real-time water quality measurements from more
than 1,300 sites nationwide in streams with watersheds as small as
a few square miles to more than a million square miles in the case
of the Mississippi River.

Measurements include stream flow, water temperature, specific
conductance, pH level, dissolved oxygen and turbidity.

According to USGS, people can use this online data to decide
whether conditions are favorable for recreational activities, and
scientists can use it to help predict environmental or health
effects.

Ingres takes OpenROAD to open source

Ingres has announced an opensource version of Ingres OpenROAD,

community Web site at community.ingres.com.

MetaFlows targets cyberthreats

MetaFlows, using a National Science Foundation award, is
partnering with the Army Research Office to develop a technology to
correlate data feeds for the Army's Cyber-Threat Analytics
(Cyber-TA) project.

'MetaFlows technology will revolutionize how people
process security events,' said Livio Ricciulli, the
company's chief scientist. 'For instance,
Google's page-ranking algorithm is widely considered to be
the most successful data correlation application ever built. We are
applying similar principles to cybersecurity warfare and will show
that global security information, gathered through our partnership
with Emerging Threats and Cyber-TA, will have a substantial impact
in the field.'

Xenocode unveils virtualization technology

Xenocode has launched Xenocode Virtual Application Studio, an
application virtualization environment that allows deployment of
Microsoft Windows and .NET- and Java-based desktop applications in
stand-alone executables that run instantly anywhere.

Xenocode specializes in application virtualization, which
separates applications from the underlying operating systems on
which they execute. Unlike traditional hardware virtualization
solutions that require an entire copy of the host operating system,
Xenocode's application virtualization technology emulates
core operating system features required for application
execution.

Motorola introduces new wireless bridges

Motorola has announced the availability of the PTP 500 series of
wireless Ethernet bridges designed for deployments that require
secure, high-performance backhaul or broadband connectivity and
deliver carrier-grade availability in obstructed, long-distance and
harsh weather environments. Operating in the 5.4 GHz and 5.8 GHz
bands at Ethernet data rates as high as 105 megabits/ sec and
distances as long as 155 miles, the PTP 500 bridges provide
midrange throughput for non-line-of-sight connectivity.

Availability of the PTP 500 Series in the 5.4 GHz band is
pending Federal Communications Commission certification.
