Hewlett Packard today unveiled several updates to its business system products, making them more secure and more energy efficient.
The HP Compaq dc7900 Business Desktop PC has an 87 percent-efficient power supply use, said Greg Morris, product manager for commercial desktops at HP Global. The dc7900 is Energy Star 4.0 qualified and Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool Gold registered, he added.
Energy-conscious organizations can also use the HP Power Manager tool, available on some of HP's business desktop PCs, to help users customize power management, Morris said. When the Power Manager's status bar is pushed all the way to the left, everything is on, he said.
Users can set the Power Manager so that it gives a report that calculates how much energy is being saved in terms of dollars, carbon dioxide and miles driven.
HP is entering the virtual browser arena with HP Firefox Virtual Browser, which alerts Web surfers to attacks by malicious software. The virtual browser corrals malicious content and removes unwanted programs with a single click, the company said.
HP is also offering two new features in its ProtectTools security suite. Privacy Manager allows customers to securely exhange e-mail with a digital signature; File Sanitizer permanently removes data from a PC before disposal.
HP's retail system, the HP rp3000 Point of Sale system, uses the low-power, low-heat Intel Atom processor and a steel chassis to handle the wear and tear of retail life, HP officials said. It also features a keyboard with an integrated credit card reader, a free-standing credit card reader and a customer display pole. HP also introduced three new retail printers, including a single station, two-color and monochrome thermal printer and two hybrid thermal printers.
The HP rp3000 is scheduled to go on sale Sept. 30, starting at $699. The HP Compaq dc7900 Business Desktop PC is slated to be available late this month, starting at $599.
