IBM has unveiled new versions of its portal and Web content management software designed to give government agencies the ability to deliver more efficient services to citizens.

IBM WebSphere Portal Version 6.1.5 software, includes new Web 2.0-style page builder and portal page template creation capabilities that make it easier for non-technical people to manage the Web portal, IBM officials said.
IBM also announced several municipalities and government agencies that have deployed the WebSphere Portal and Lotus Web Content management software to securely present important information and communicate both internally and externally using a variety of Web 2.0 tools.
IBM Lotus Connections social services for WebSphere Portal has been enhanced to allow developers to bring popular social networking features into the portal Web experience. IBM has improved custom site analytics that can be used with third party software. Detailed charts, graphs and data can show a variety of granular data, such as how often a page or specific function is accessed. This type of information can help Web site developers continually optimize their users’ portal experiences.
IBM Lotus Web Content Management, version 6.1.5 software can be used to create, maintain and deliver business content across intranet, extranet, Internet, and portal sites. The new version includes templates that let users more quickly embed capabilities, such as blogs and wikis, into a portal. Improved integration with IBM FileNet, IBM Content Manager, and IBM Lotus Quickr software gives users easier and more secure access to a wider variety of content sources. The new Web Content Integrator feature allows for content consumption from any content repository and third-party sites capable of producing feeds, officials said.
IBM has also created other new industry toolboxes that help companies tailor their portals to serve customers in other industries, including banking, insurance, and health care.
A variety of government agencies are using IBM’s portal and web content management software including the city of Helsinki (Finland), Los Angeles County, the U.S Nuclear Regulatory Commission, and Finnish Defence Forces, officials said.
Los Angeles County has standardized the WebSphere Portal and Lotus Web Content Management software for its external citizen site, and for the Department of Health citizen and business portal. The county's solution was recently recognized by the National Association of Counties for enhancing access to and delivery of county information and services to its constituents.
Helsinki uses WebSphere Portal and Lotus Web Content Management to provide citizens with a portal that lets them communicate and exchange information, access the city’s health service, and reserve appointments.
The portal experience is enhanced by IBM Process Server and Enterprise Service Bus, which provides advanced e-Services for the citizens of Helsinki and surrounding cities, IBM officials said.
