The chips are Intel's first server and workstation processors built on 32-nanometer technology, and include Advanced Encryption Standard New Instructions and Trusted Execution Technology, which Intel said will add security to cloud computing environments.

Intel on Tuesday launched its latest generation of the Xeon 5600 line of processors, with up to six cores designed to increase performance and energy efficiency, and two security features intended to help secure transactions and virtualized environments.

The 5600 line also includes the company’s Advanced Encryption Standard New Instructions (AES-NI), and Trusted Execution Technology (Intel TXT), which Intel said will enabled faster encryption and decryption in virtualized environments, which would add security to cloud computing.

AES-NI accelerates encryption processes for a range of applications, such as database encryption features, full disk encryption and secure internet transactions, the company said.

Intel TXT adds security to cloud environments by enabling a more secure platform and providing more protection for applications that move between virtualized servers, the company said.

Energy efficiency is a focus of the new chips. The company said quad-core version of the Intel Xeon processor 5600 series peaks at 3.46 GHz with a thermal design power rating of 130 watts. The six-core version reaches 3.33 GHz with a TDP of 130 watts. Advanced six-core versions will top out at 2.93 GHz and TDP of 95 watts, and the standard quad-core processor will reach 2.66 GHz at 80 watts.

The new chips also include hyperthreading and support Intel Turbo Boost, with which the power to individual cores can be adjusted depending in the workload they’re given.

The 5600 series range in price from $387 to $1,663 in quantities of 1,000.
