GCN opens nomination window for 23rd annual IT project awards

GCN looks to recognize outstanding government agencies IT projects
Government Computer News has officially opened the nomination window for the 23rd annual GCN Agency IT Awards, which recognize the extraordinary information technology work by government agencies.
The GCN Awards recognize government project teams for their work applying information technologies that have led to significant improvements over the past year in helping agencies perform their missions, or support their operations, more effectively.
The deadline for nominations is at the end of the day, June 28, 2010. Nominations will then be screened and evaluated by a judging panel that includes current and former government chief information officers and IT executives. Winners will be notified the last week of August and honored at the annual GCN Gala Awards Gala on October 27, 2010. In addition, the winning project teams will be profiled in GCN’s October 18, 2010 issue.

Only U.S. federal, state or local government agencies are eligible to win. Organizations may be nominated at the department, agency, directorate, bureau or office level. Defense Department nominations may similarly be made at the department, service, command or smaller unit level. Nominations may be submitted by any individual or organization having direct knowledge of the agency IT accomplishment – including members of an agency IT team, their associates or industry partners.
Nominations must pertain to IT projects that were implemented primarily during the past 12 months or which demonstrated significant improvements during that time period.
The winning IT projects will be selected based on how effectively their project teams applied information technology solutions which:
• Provided substantial improvement in government-to-citizen, government-to-business or government-to-government transactions, services or processes; or
• Provided substantial improvement in the efficiency or effectiveness of a department, agency or bureau in delivering its mission; or
• Solved a significant or long-standing problem that helped advance an agency’s work.
In addition, the GCN Awards judging committee will look for:
• Innovation and risk taking – Did the team implement new and more effective solutions or merely automate processes?
• Evidence of improvements – Does the nomination provide evidence of tangible, quantifiable results or merely general statements?
• Agency leadership – Does the work reflect the leadership of agency IT personnel, working with suppliers, or is it mostly the work of outside providers?
