State's site combines topic areas with links to local directories.

You have to love a government site that offers information on licensed acupuncture doctors and naturopathic medicine. Or maybe you consider that an over-reach. Either way, California‘s website serves its people, businesses and visitors in a clean, concise and informative manner.

State officials have described www.ca.gov as a front door to all California state department websites. The home page provides access to major topic areas, news, online services and links to local help directories, such as 211 or 311, in addition to sites from all state agencies. Additionally, there are links to location-based search, social media links and subscription feeds.

California has offered information via digital delivery since 2001 with major redesigns along the way. The latest redesign in June 2010 included enhanced search capabilities to make services and information easier to find.

An “improved, interactive design includes an updated public data site with more than 100 million records available for custom mashup applications, a mobile site with more than 20 applications designed for smart phones, and searchable maps with data on thousands of office locations, parks, schools, universities, libraries, and more,” said Stacey Walker, an executive at the California Office of eServices, in an interview with Juggle.com.

The California portal has raked in a slew of awards, including a Top Government Website award from Juggle.com in 2010, first place in the state portal category by e.Republic’s Center for Digital Government, and a Sunny Award from the Sunshine Review for government transparency.
