Splunk gives admins deeper analytic dive into virtualization systems
Connecting state and local government leaders
Splunk App for VMware 3.0 lets admins monitor IT operations and correlate data from virtualized data center systems and technologies.
As government agencies move more applications and workloads into the cloud, data centers and other virtualized environments, managers demand better data monitoring and analytics.
That’s especially true because while virtualization makes data centers efficient, it also uncouples the virtualized system from its underlying physical hardware. This issue can “cause complex challenges during incident investigations, capacity analyses, change and security reporting,” according to Splunk Inc., which recently introduced a new version of an app to put help virtualized data from different data center systems into focus.
The company says Splunk App for VMWare 3.0 will help improve agencies’ visibility into virtualized systems. IT administrators can use the software to monitor IT operations and correlate VMware data with applications, operating systems and hardware associated with servers, storage and network devices, the company announced.
VMware is a leading provider of virtualization software with a sizable presence in federal, state and local agencies. The company is holding its annual VMWorld conference this week in San Francisco where it announced a platform for network virtualization and dynamic storage for virtual machines. The technologies support a general drive toward the software-defined data center, designed to automate data center management.
Splunk App for VMware provides more than 25 out-of-the-box reports that let administrators quickly resolve questions and get deeper analytics about the health of their IT and data centers, according to Leena Joshi, Splunk’s senior director of solutions marketing.
The software gives administrators a central view of key performance indicators across the entire data center, not just the virtualization layer, Joshi said. “This helps ensure improved user satisfaction and effective resource planning as well as the ability to track changes, control costs and eliminate vulnerabilities."
The latest version of the app installs comes with an auto-load-balanced configuration allowing for uninterrupted visibility into VMware environments, officials said.
Administrators can access interactive visualizations of their environments that highlight problems and emphasize statistical comparisons of performance metrics. The app shows activity across hosts, virtual machines and virtual centers based on pre-defined thresholds and pre-packaged log analyses, Splunk officials said.
