WD deploys ultra-compact backup appliances
Connecting state and local government leaders
Most agencies and state governments use automatic file backups for disaster recovery as a way to ensure that nothing is lost to network glitches. A network appliance is often the easiest way for IT managers to do backups.
WD, a Western Digital company, has announced two new ultra-compact backup appliances: the WD Arkeia DA1300 and DA2300, which offers small-and medium-sized businesses or agencies all-in-one backup and disaster recovery solutions.
Both the WD Arkeia DA1300 and DA2300 feature the Arkeia v10.1 software that helps manage an unlimited number of file and folder backup agents on any of over 200 distinct platform types, including Windows, Linux, Mac, AIX, HP-UX, Solaris and Novell. The software also offers optional specialized agents for hot backups of important applications and databases. WD Arkeia uses the company’s Progressive Deduplication technology to reduce storage volume and deliver faster backups.
For hardware, the WD Arkeia DA1300 and DA2300 backup appliances integrate the Intel Atom dual-core processor and the Intel Xeon processors, respectively. As with the Arkeia top-end rack-mounted appliances, the DA2300 uses solid state drives to maximize backup and data recovery performance. Both also have an integrated LCD display to communicate status information quickly to the user.
The new cube designs for both models measure 8.1 inches by 6.3 inches by 8.8 inches. They are small enough to be deployed on a desktop.
The entry-level DA1300 features WD Red NAS hard drives for more affordable NAS storage. The DA2300 features enterprise-class WD Se hard drives for maximum data integrity. Raw storage capacity ranges from 4 TB to 8 TB for the DA1300 and 8 TB to 16 TB for the DA2300. Both appliances are field upgradable, and disks are configured in RAID-1.
The WD Arkeia DA1300 will be available in late September, and the DA2300 model will be available later in the fall. Both appliances will be sold through select WD-authorized value-added resellers in the US, Canada and Europe. The suggested retail price, including hardware and software, starts at $3,490 for the 4 TB DA1300 model.
